Description

We had a rare clear night in Hilo June 27 so I was able to do some lunar imaging.  Clavius, one of my favorite lunar features, was near the terminator.  The image on the left of this composite image is Clavius as captured by the C11.   I was pleased with the detail that I was able to capture using a Celestron C11 and a ZWO ASI678MC planetary camera.  Because Clavius is located in the southern highlands region of the Moon, it is typically seen in images as elliptical in shape instead of its true circular form due to foreshortening as viewed from the Earth.    To try to correct the foreshortening of Clavius, I used the free WinJUPOS software to re-project my Clavius image to show it as it would look to a viewer directly above Clavius.  This is the middle image in my composite image above.

The image on the right of my composite image is a screenshot from Wikipedia of Clavius as imaged by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC).  It is a sunset image of Clavius as opposed to my sunrise image but is almost the same orientation.  The LROC image has, as expected, greater resolution than my image but I was impressed with the detail that I was able to capture from my yard in Hilo, Hawaii.  Clicking on the image will show an enlarged view.  By clicking on the red Full Resolution button in the upper right, you will be able to do a more detailed comparison of my re-projected center image and the LROC screenshot.
